Granuloma

Vocal cord granuloma occurs in the posterior larynx. This is a benign condition although it resembles a neoplasm.

This lesion is due to a contact ulcer at the spot of interaction with the other arytenoid. Granuloma are a response to a clearing of the throat and often begin as a painful area that the patient points to in the initial exam. Lesion is often on one side only, but can be bilateral.

Some of these are due to endotracheal intubation for a lengthy surgery or ICU attendance.

Treatment begins with a laryngoscopy, followed by a twice-a-day proton pump inhibitor (PPI) and the judicious use of speech therapy to reinforce good vocal hygiene.
